Preparing Your Home for Sale

by Michelle Lucca

Selling a home can be a stressful process, but there are some things you can do to make it go more smoothly. With a little bit of effort, you can prepare your home for sale so that it appeals to buyers and fetches a good price. Here are seven easy ways to get started.

1. Start with the outside.

The first thing potential buyers will see is the exterior of your home, so it's important to make a good first impression. If your siding or paint is looking faded or chipped, consider giving your home a fresh coat of paint. You might also want to power wash your sidewalks and driveway and add some colorful flowers or plants to your landscaping. A few simple changes can go a long way in making your home more appealing from the street.

2. Declutter and deep clean.

Once you've tackled the outside, it's time to move inside. One of the best ways to make your home more inviting is to declutter and give it a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. Get rid of any personal items like family photos and souvenirs, and put away any clutter like paperwork, toys, and clothes. Don't forget to dust all those hard-to-reach places and clean the windows too! A sparkling clean home will show buyers that you've taken good care of the property.

3. Let there be light.

When preparing your home for sale, one of the most important things you can do is brighten up the place by letting in as much natural light as possible. Open up all the curtains and blinds before showings so that rooms appear airy and light. You might also want to replace any dark light fixtures with brighter ones or add some lamps to dim areas. Good lighting makes a big difference in how inviting a space feels.

4. Create an inviting entryway

As they say, first impressions are everything! Create a warm and welcoming entryway for buyers by decluttering the area, adding a fresh coat of paint, and hanging up an attractive piece of art or an interesting mirror. You might also want to place a small table or bench nearby where people can take their shoes off when they come inside—no one likes tracking mud through the house!

Selling a home doesn't have to be difficult—a little bit of work upfront can pay off in a smoother sales process and a higher final price tag. By following these seven easy tips, you'll be well on your way to getting your home ready for sale in no time!
