Prepare Your Home for Sale

by Michelle McMaster

Preparing your home for sale can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. With a little bit of elbow grease and some strategic thinking, you can get your home ready to sell in no time. Here are seven easy ways to do just that:

1. Start with a deep clean.

When potential buyers come to look at your home, the first thing they're going to notice is how clean (or not clean) it is. Give your home a thorough cleaning from top to bottom, paying special attention to areas that tend to get neglected, like baseboards and light fixtures. Not only will a clean home make a better impression, but it will also give you a head start on packing up all your belongings!

2. De-clutter and depersonalize.

While you want potential buyers to be able to visualize themselves living in your home, it's important not to overwhelm them with personal items like family photos and collections. Put away anything that might make the space feel cluttered or cramped, and consider neutralizing any bold paint colors or patterns that could turn buyers off.

3. Fix any broken items.

Broken door knobs, loose cabinet handles, and cracked tile are all small things that can make a big impression on potential buyers. Take the time to fix any little things around your home that might be detracting from its overall appeal.

4. Let in the light.

Open up all the curtains and blinds in your home before showings so that potential buyers can see how bright and airy the space is. You might even want to replace any heavy drapes with lighter curtains to really maximize the light coming in.

5. Make sure the temperature is comfortable

You want potential buyers to feel comfortable when they're walking through your home, so make sure the temperature is set to a level that won't make them break out into a sweat (or reach for their coat).

6. Put away all pet items.

Even if you don't have pets yourself, it's important to put away any pet beds, toys, food bowls, etc., before showings begin. Not everyone is an animal lover, and you don't want anything turning potential buyers off of your home before they've even had a chance to really see it.

7. Add some fresh flowers or greenery

A few well-placed blooms can really brighten up a space and make it feel more inviting—the perfect combination when you're trying to sell your home! If flowers aren't really your style, potted plants are also a nice way to add some life into otherwise drab rooms.

selling your home doesn't haveto be stressful—with a little bit of elbow grease and some strategic thinking, you can get your home ready for sale in no time! Just follow these seven easy tips and you'll be well on your way: start with a deep clean; de-clutter and depersonalize; fix any broken items; let in the light; make sure the temperature is comfortable; put away all pet items; add some fresh flowers or greenery! Good luck!
