Home Maintenance Projects to Tackle This Winter

by Michelle Lucca

As the temperatures start to drop and winter sets in, now is the perfect time to start thinking about all of the home maintenance projects you've been meaning to do but haven't had the time (or the weather) to tackle. From checking your gutters to cleaning your chimney, there are a number of things you can do to prepare your home for the winter months ahead.

1. Check Your Gutters

One of the most important things you can do to prepare your home for winter is to make sure your gutters are clean and in good working order. Clogged or damaged gutters can cause a number of problems, including water damage to your foundation and leaks in your roof. So take some time this winter to clean out your gutters and check for any potential problems.

2. Service Your Heating System

If you have a furnace or boiler, now is the time to have it serviced by a professional. This will help ensure that it's running efficiently and help prevent any breakdowns during the coldest months of the year. It's also a good idea to change your furnace filter regularly, as a dirty filter can impede airflow and reduce efficiency.

3. Clean Your Chimney

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, it's important to have your chimney cleaned on a yearly basis. Otherwise, soot and creosote can build up, leading to a dangerous fire hazard. Be sure to hire a professional chimney sweep who will be able to thoroughly clean your chimney and identify any potential problems.

By taking care of these home maintenance projects this winter, you'll help ensure that your home is safe and comfortable all season long. So don't let the cold weather keep you from getting started on those much-needed repairs—after all, there's no time like the present!
